JOHNSON, PAUL C.,JON BLASCHKE, KENNETH S. BURTON, AND JOE H. DIAL. Infruence of Jzozo variations on capillary hematocrit in mcsenter-y. Am. J. Physiol. 221(l): 105-l 12. 1971.~Red cell spacing was measured on line in mesenteric capillaries of the cat by counting red cells passing through the capillary and simultaneously measuring red cell velocity. Most capillaries had reasonably stable hematocrit values under control conditions although some showed erratic changes and in a few a well-defined periodicity was apparent. Gross flow to the mesentery was reduced for l-2 min by partial occlusion of the arterial perfusion circuit. Capillary hematocrit was, on the average, unchanged during hypotension although onethird of the capillaries showed a reproducible increase or decrease. These changes were slower than the accompanying reduction of pressure and flow. With sudden restoration of pressure and flow, hematocrit remained essentially unchanged. Vasomotion led in some instances to changes in hematocrit. This appeared to be associated with vasomotion of precapillary sphincters or possibly metarterioles. Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that flow fractionation at the capillary entrance is an important determinant of capillary hematocrit while the absolute flow rate seems to have little effect.

Microcirculatory Networks by Hemodilution

The effect of isovolemic hemodilution on red blood cell flow distribution was studied in complete self-contained microvessel networks of the rat mesentery. Hematocrit, diameter, and length of all vessel segments as well as the topological structure were determined in control networks (systemic hematocrit, 0.54) and after hemodilution (systemic hematocrit, 0.30). Hemodilution was performed by ex...

Blood flow in microvascular networks. Experiments and simulation.

A theoretical model has been developed to simulate blood flow through large microcirculatory networks. The model takes into account the dependence of apparent viscosity of blood on vessel diameter and hematocrit (the Fahraeus-Lindqvist effect), the reduction of intravascular hematocrit relative to the inflow hematocrit of a vessel (the Fahraeus effect), and the disproportionate distribution of ...

Dispersion of indicator measured from microvessels of cat mesentery.

The indicator-dilution method was used to investigate blood flow in the microvascular network of the mesenteric membrane of the cat by replacing the normal blood flow into the mesenteric artery with a dextran-saline solution for a finite period of time. The dilution of the dextran-saline bolus as it flowed downstream was measured in a selected arteriole and its adjacent venule with a microphoto...

Shedding of the endothelial glycocalyx in arterioles, capillaries, and venules and its effect on capillary hemodynamics during inflammation.

The endothelial glycocalyx has been identified as a barrier to transvascular exchange of fluid, macromolecules, and leukocyte-endothelium [endothelial cell (EC)] adhesion during the inflammatory process. Shedding of glycans and structural changes of the glycocalyx have been shown to occur in response to several agonists. To elucidate the effects of glycan shedding on microvascular hemodynamics ...
